Applicant & Employment Policy

Employment type, probation, casual work, self-employment and visa status can all influence lender selection. Understand the common considerations before ruling a client in — or out.

The bigger picture

What can lenders consider?

Employment status is rarely considered in isolation. Assessment can involve the client's broader employment, income and credit position.

Employment stability

Depending on the lender and product, consideration may be given to:

  • Time with the current employer
  • Previous employment history
  • Industry continuity
  • Employment type
  • Probation status
  • Consistency of hours and earnings

Overall application

The wider application may also influence the lender's assessment.

  • Income stability
  • Credit profile
  • Existing commitments
  • Loan amount and structure
  • Asset being financed
  • Supporting documentation

Applicant scenarios at a glance

A starting point for conversations with clients before submitting a scenario for assessment.

Probation
Being on probation does not automatically prevent finance. Previous employment, industry continuity, income stability and the overall application may be relevant to lender selection.
Casual Employment
Casual employment can be acceptable to selected lenders. Length of employment, regular hours and consistent income may form part of the assessment.
New Employment
Recently starting a new job does not necessarily mean the client must wait before applying. Previous employment and experience within the same industry can be relevant.
Self-Employed
Documentation requirements vary considerably. Depending on the transaction and lender, full-documentation, alternative-documentation or Low Doc pathways may be available.
Contractors
Assessment can depend on whether the applicant operates as PAYG, sole trader or through another business structure, together with income and contracting history.
Visa Holders
Selected lenders may consider eligible temporary visa holders. Visa class, remaining visa term, employment, proposed loan term and other lender requirements can influence eligibility.
Partner Tip

Don't automatically rule a client out because they're casual, on probation, recently changed jobs, self-employed or hold a temporary visa. Different lenders can approach the same employment scenario differently.
