Buying a used tractor? Learn what to inspect before you commit — from engine hours and service history to hydraulics, PTO, transmission, tyres and attachments.
A used tractor can represent excellent value, but two tractors with the same badge, age and engine hours can have lived very different working lives. Before buying, it pays to inspect more than the paintwork.
Tractors are working machines. Their condition can reflect thousands of hours of towing, loader work, PTO operation, hydraulic use, paddock work and exposure to dust, mud and weather.
That makes a structured pre-purchase inspection particularly useful.
Don’t Judge a Used Tractor on Engine Hours Alone
Hours matter, but they need context. Maintenance history, operating conditions, hydraulic condition, transmission wear, tyres, attachments and the type of work the tractor has performed can all help build a much better picture of the machine.

1. Before You Inspect the Tractor
A useful tractor inspection starts before you arrive at the property, dealership or machinery yard.
Ask the seller for enough information to identify the machine and understand its basic history.
Ask for These Details Beforehand
- Make and model.
- Year of manufacture.
- Current engine hours.
- Serial or identification number.
- Ownership history if known.
- Service history.
- Major repairs completed.
- Attachments included in the sale.
- Reason for selling.
- Whether GST is included where relevant.
If the tractor is several hours away, asking for clear photos and documentation before travelling can save considerable time.
Ask the Seller Not to Warm the Tractor Up
Where practical, seeing how the tractor starts from cold can reveal information that may be less obvious once the engine is already at operating temperature.
2. Check the Tractor’s Identification and Documentation
Before getting deep into the mechanical inspection, confirm that you are actually inspecting the tractor represented in the advertisement and sale documentation.
Serial Number
Locate the tractor’s identification or serial number and make sure it appears intact and consistent with the available documentation.
Make and Model
Confirm the exact model and variant rather than relying only on decals or the advertisement.
Year
Check the represented manufacture year against available identification information.
Seller Details
Make sure the seller and transaction details make sense, particularly for a private sale.
Identification Matters for More Than the Inspection
Correct identification can also be important when researching market value, arranging finance, checking security interests and confirming exactly what is included in the transaction.
3. How Many Hours Are on the Tractor?
Engine hours are one of the first figures most buyers look at — and understandably so.
But there is no universal number of hours at which a used tractor suddenly becomes “too old”.
Potentially Less Use
Lower hours can be attractive, but they do not guarantee good maintenance or good mechanical condition.
Potentially More Wear
Higher hours deserve closer investigation, particularly around maintenance, hydraulics, driveline components and major repairs.
What Happened During Those Hours?
The type of work performed and how the tractor was maintained can be just as important as the number displayed on the hour meter.
Look at the Hours in Context
- Age of the tractor.
- Service intervals.
- Type of work performed.
- Loader use.
- PTO use.
- Major component repairs.
- Previous operating environment.
- Current mechanical condition.
Do the Hours Look Plausible?
An unusually low-hour reading on a heavily worn tractor deserves further investigation. Look at wear on pedals, controls, seat, steering wheel, linkage components and loader pins and compare the overall condition with the displayed hours.
4. Review the Service and Maintenance History
A documented maintenance history can be extremely useful when assessing a used working machine.
Rather than simply asking whether the tractor has been “regularly serviced”, look for records that help show what work has actually been completed.
Engine Servicing
Look for oil and filter changes at appropriate intervals.
Hydraulic Servicing
Check whether hydraulic fluid and filters have been maintained as required.
Transmission Maintenance
Look for evidence of transmission and driveline servicing where applicable.
Cooling System
Check whether coolant and related components have received appropriate maintenance.
Major Repairs
Ask about engine, transmission, clutch, differential, hydraulic pump or other significant work.
Replacement Parts
Receipts can help establish when expensive components were repaired or replaced.
A missing service history does not automatically mean the tractor has been neglected, particularly with owner-maintained agricultural machinery, but it does mean you may have less evidence to rely on.
Ask Specific Questions
“What has been replaced in the last 1,000 hours?” will often produce more useful information than simply asking, “Has it been serviced?”
5. Start the Tractor From Cold
Where possible, inspect the tractor before it has been started for the day.
Before turning the key, carefully check whether the engine feels warm. A warm engine may simply mean the tractor has recently been used, but if you specifically arranged a cold-start inspection it is worth asking why.
Check the Engine
Confirm it is genuinely cold before starting where practical.
Start Normally
Observe how quickly the engine starts without unusual assistance.
Listen Carefully
Pay attention to knocking, rattling, uneven running or other unusual noises.
Watch the Exhaust
Observe smoke during start-up and as the engine settles into operation.
Things Worth Noting During Start-Up
- Excessive cranking before starting.
- Difficulty starting.
- Uneven idle.
- Unusual mechanical noises.
- Warning lights that remain illuminated.
- Excessive or persistent exhaust smoke.
- Fluid leaks appearing once the engine is running.
Some Start-Up Smoke Can Have Several Causes
Diesel exhaust behaviour varies with engine design, temperature, load and condition. Persistent or concerning smoke should be assessed in context rather than diagnosed from colour alone. If you are unsure, arrange an appropriate mechanical inspection.
6. Inspect the Engine
Once the tractor is running, listen to the engine at idle and through a sensible range of engine speeds.
Listen
- Knocking.
- Rattling.
- Hunting or uneven idle.
- Unexpected vibration.
Look
- Oil leaks.
- Fuel leaks.
- Damaged hoses.
- Loose components.
Monitor
- Warning lights.
- Temperature.
- Oil-pressure indications.
- Exhaust behaviour.
Allow enough time for the tractor to begin reaching normal operating temperature rather than inspecting it for only a few minutes.
7. Check Fluids and Look for Leaks
A working tractor contains multiple systems that can leak, so inspect both the machine itself and the ground underneath it.
Look around hoses, seals, hydraulic couplings, cylinders, engine components, transmission areas and axle housings.
Fresh Cleaning Can Hide Evidence
A very clean machine is not automatically suspicious, but freshly pressure-washed engine or hydraulic areas can make slow leaks harder to identify. Recheck the tractor after it has been operating for a while.
8. Inspect the Cooling System
Tractors often work for long periods under significant load, making cooling-system condition important.
Check Where Safe and Appropriate
- Radiator condition.
- Coolant hoses.
- Visible coolant leaks.
- Fan and belt condition.
- Debris around cooling packs.
- Temperature behaviour while operating.
Never Open a Hot Pressurised Cooling System
Hot coolant can cause serious burns. Cooling-system inspection should be performed safely and in accordance with the manufacturer's procedures.
9. Test the Transmission and Clutch
Transmission design varies considerably between tractors, so understand what system the particular machine uses before judging how it should operate.
Depending on the tractor, this could include a conventional manual transmission, powershift, power shuttle, hydrostatic drive or continuously variable transmission.
Forward and Reverse
Engagement should be tested carefully in both directions.
Gear Changes
Work through the appropriate gears or ranges and note abnormal noises or engagement issues.
Clutch Operation
Where fitted, assess clutch engagement and watch for slipping, shudder or unusual pedal behaviour.
Shuttle Operation
Loader tractors can perform frequent direction changes, making shuttle operation particularly worth checking.
Under Load
Where practical and safe, observe how the driveline behaves when the tractor is actually working.
Noise and Vibration
Listen for whining, grinding, clunking or vibration that warrants further investigation.
Loader Work Can Be Hard on a Tractor’s Driveline
A tractor that has spent much of its life performing loader work may have experienced frequent forward/reverse changes and significant front-axle, transmission and hydraulic use. That does not make it a bad tractor — it simply gives you more context for the inspection.
10. Check 4WD and the Front Axle
If the tractor is four-wheel drive, inspect the front axle and driveline carefully, particularly where a front-end loader is fitted.
Inspect for
- Oil leaks around hubs and axle seals.
- Excessive steering or pivot play.
- Damaged front axle components.
- Unusual noises while turning.
- 4WD engagement and disengagement.
- Uneven front tyre wear.
- Evidence of heavy impact or repair.
- Loader-related wear.
Front-end loaders place additional load through the tractor’s front axle, steering and chassis, making these areas particularly relevant on loader-equipped machines.
11. Test the Hydraulic System Properly
Hydraulics are central to the usefulness of many tractors, so simply checking that a loader moves up and down is not enough.
Loader Operation
Raise, lower, tilt and crowd the loader smoothly through its operating range.
Rear Remotes
Where fitted, check hydraulic remote operation and couplings.
Three-Point Linkage
Raise and lower the linkage and observe its response.
Hydraulic Cylinders
Inspect cylinder rods, seals and hoses for damage or leakage.
Hydraulic Pump
Listen for abnormal noises and note weak, jerky or unusually slow operation.
Operation When Warm
Where practical, reassess hydraulic performance after the tractor has reached operating temperature.
Hydraulic Problems Can Become Expensive Quickly
Slow operation, unusual noises, weak lifting performance, leaking cylinders or poor operation when warm deserve further investigation before purchase.
12. Test the PTO
The power take-off allows the tractor to drive implements such as slashers, mowers, balers, spreaders and other agricultural equipment.
If PTO operation matters to how you intend to use the tractor, make sure it forms part of the inspection.
Engagement
Check that the PTO engages and disengages correctly.
Noise
Listen for abnormal mechanical noise or vibration during operation.
PTO Shaft
Inspect the output shaft for visible wear or damage.
Controls
Check that relevant PTO controls and indicators operate as expected.
Ideally Test the Systems You Actually Intend to Use
A tractor can drive perfectly around a machinery yard while still having faults in systems such as the PTO, hydraulics or three-point linkage. Your inspection should reflect the work you expect the tractor to perform.
13. Inspect the Three-Point Linkage
The rear linkage can reveal a great deal about how the tractor has been used and maintained.
Look at
- Lift arms.
- Linkage balls and ends.
- Top-link mounting points.
- Stabilisers.
- Pins and bushes.
- Hydraulic lift operation.
- Excessive play.
- Bent or repaired components.
Wear is normal on a working tractor, but heavily elongated holes, bent components, crude welding or excessive movement can indicate substantial use or previous damage.
14. Check the Steering and Brakes
Steering and braking components can experience significant wear on tractors that have spent years working in paddocks, yards, slopes, loader applications or heavy towing.
Steering Play
Check for excessive free play through the steering wheel and front steering components.
Power Steering
Make sure assistance feels consistent and listen for unusual hydraulic noise.
Brake Operation
Test braking response at a safe speed and note pulling, weak braking or abnormal pedal behaviour.
Individual Brake Pedals
Where separate left and right pedals are fitted, inspect their condition and confirm they operate correctly.
Parking Brake
Check that the parking brake holds the tractor appropriately on suitable ground.
Steering Components
Inspect tie rods, joints, cylinders and front-end linkages for excessive play or visible damage.
Brakes Deserve Extra Attention on Tractors Used for Towing
A tractor used regularly with heavy implements, trailers or on sloping ground may place greater demands on braking systems. Any weak or inconsistent braking should be investigated before purchase.
15. Inspect the Tyres and Wheels
Tractor tyres can be expensive, so remaining tread alone should not be the only consideration.
Tread Depth
Check how much usable tread remains across all tyres.
Cracking
Look for age-related cracking, particularly in sidewalls and between tread lugs.
Cuts and Damage
Inspect for cuts, puncture repairs, exposed cords or damaged lugs.
Uneven Wear
Uneven tyre wear can indicate alignment, steering, pressure or mechanical issues.
Wheel Condition
Check rims, wheel centres, studs and mounting areas for cracks, corrosion or damage.
Matched Tyres
On four-wheel-drive tractors, confirm tyre sizing and rolling circumference are suitable across the front and rear axles.
Tyres Can Change the True Purchase Cost
A tractor that appears attractively priced can become considerably more expensive if it immediately needs a set of large agricultural tyres.
16. Inspect the Chassis and Structural Condition
Look beyond faded paint and cosmetic wear. Agricultural tractors can accumulate structural stress from loader use, towing, impacts and rough terrain.
Look Closely For
- Cracks around mounting points.
- Fresh or unusual welding.
- Bent structural components.
- Damage around loader mounts.
- Loose or missing bolts.
- Corrosion.
- Repairs around axle housings.
- Damage around three-point linkage mounts.
Not Every Weld Is a Problem — But Understand Why It Is There
Repairs may have been performed properly, but significant welding in structural areas should be understood before purchase, particularly if the tractor has done heavy loader or towing work.
17. Check the Cab, Controls and Electrical Systems
Cab condition can provide useful clues about how heavily the tractor has been used and how well it has been maintained.
Dashboard
Check gauges, warning lights, displays and the hour meter.
Switches and Controls
Test lights, indicators, wipers, horn and relevant operational switches.
Air Conditioning
For cab tractors, test heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
Seat and Controls
Heavy wear can provide context about usage and operator environment.
Glass and Mirrors
Inspect windscreen, windows and mirrors for damage.
Electrical Additions
Look for poorly installed wiring, accessories or modifications.

A heavily worn seat, pedals and controls on a supposedly very low-hour machine should encourage you to ask more questions about its history and hour reading.
18. Inspect the Front-End Loader
If the tractor has a front-end loader, inspect it as a major component of the machine rather than simply treating it as an accessory.
Pins and Bushes
Check for excessive play through loader pivot points.
Boom and Frame
Look for cracks, distortion, repairs or evidence of overloading.
Hydraulic Cylinders
Inspect rods and seals for leaks, scoring or damage.
Hoses and Couplings
Check hydraulic hoses, fittings and quick couplers for wear or leakage.
Bucket or Attachment
Inspect cutting edges, mounting points and attachment locking systems.
Loader Function
Operate the loader smoothly through lift, lower, crowd and dump functions.
Loader Wear Can Tell You How the Tractor Was Used
Excessive play in pins, worn bucket edges, repaired loader frames and front-axle wear can all provide clues about the intensity of previous loader work.
19. Check Attachments and Implements Included in the Sale
A tractor may be sold with a loader, bucket, forks, slasher, mower, post-hole auger, spreader or other implements.
Make sure you understand exactly what is included in the agreed purchase price.
Identify Each Attachment
Confirm make, model, size and compatibility where relevant.
Inspect Condition
Look for wear, cracks, damaged bearings, bent components and hydraulic leaks.
Check Mounting Systems
Make sure loaders, quick-hitches and other attachment systems operate correctly.
Test Where Practical
If an attachment materially contributes to the purchase price, consider testing it rather than assuming it functions correctly.
Accessory Cost Is Not Automatically Market Value
Attachments can add real practical value, but their original purchase cost does not necessarily translate dollar-for-dollar into the current market value of the tractor package.

20. Put the Tractor Through a Proper Operational Test
A tractor inspection should involve more than driving it a few metres around a yard.
Where safe, practical and permitted by the seller, operate the tractor long enough to test the systems relevant to how you intend to use it.
Drive Through the Gears
Test forward and reverse operation and appropriate transmission ranges.
Use the Hydraulics
Operate loader functions, rear remotes and linkage where fitted.
Engage 4WD
Check engagement and listen for abnormal noises where suitable.
Test the PTO
Confirm PTO engagement and operation where safe and appropriate.
Use the Brakes
Check braking performance in a safe environment.
Recheck When Warm
After operating the machine, look again for leaks, warning lights, hydraulic weakness or temperature issues.
Warm-Up Can Reveal Problems That a Five-Minute Inspection Misses
Hydraulic performance, cooling behaviour, transmission operation and fluid leaks can sometimes present differently once the tractor has been working for a while.
21. Check PPSR and Ownership Details Where Relevant
Mechanical condition is only one part of buying a used tractor.
Before completing the purchase, make sure you understand the seller, the asset identification and whether appropriate PPSR due diligence should be completed.
Verify Identification
Confirm the tractor’s identification details against the actual machine and available paperwork.
Check the Seller
Make sure the seller’s details and authority to sell the tractor make sense.

What genuine market and practical value do the included attachments add?
How much evidence exists about previous maintenance?
How does the price compare with genuinely similar tractors?
Does this tractor actually suit the work you need it to perform?
The Cheapest Tractor Isn’t Always the Lowest-Cost Tractor
A cheaper machine needing tyres, hydraulic repairs, major servicing and driveline work may ultimately cost considerably more than a better-maintained tractor with a higher initial asking price.
23. Financing a Used Tractor
If the tractor is being purchased for business use, finance may potentially be available depending on the applicant, asset and lender.
Different lenders can have different policies around used agricultural machinery.
A Lender May Consider
- Tractor age.
- Purchase price.
- Asset condition.
- Operating hours.
- Business use.
- Dealer or private sale.
- Applicant profile.
- Requested loan amount and term.
- Valuation evidence where required.
For used machinery, the amount being asked by the seller does not necessarily mean a lender will accept the same figure as the asset value for finance purposes.
